Wind damages Dallas roofs in three ways: it tears shingles off entirely, it lifts and creases shingles that stay attached but have broken their seal, and it peels ridge caps and flashing. Missing shingles are obvious. Creased shingles are the hidden problem, because they look fine from the ground but will leak or blow off in the next storm, and they're what an adjuster counts. If a wind event in your area took down limbs or fences, have an insured roofer walk the roof within a week and document every crease and tear.
How wind damage looks on a DFW roof
Missing tabs. Shingles torn off completely, usually along edges, ridges, and the windward slopes, leaving underlayment or decking exposed. You'll often find them in the yard or a neighbor's.
Creased shingles. The wind lifts a tab, folds it back, and lets it drop. It looks normal from the ground, but a horizontal crease line shows when the roofer lifts it, and the seal strip is broken. Creased shingles are damaged shingles and are counted for claims.
Ridge caps, flashing, and vents. Ridge caps peel first because they're most exposed. Turbine vents and satellite mounts get bent. Step flashing along walls can lift. Gutters and fascia can be pulled loose by wind-driven debris.
Repair or claim: how the math works
Small areas on a newer roof: a repair. Replace the missing tabs, replace (don't glue) the creased ones, reseal, and replace the ridge caps. Commonly $300 to $1,200 depending on how many shingles and how high the roof is. Often under a Texas percentage deductible, so paying out of pocket usually makes sense.
Widespread creasing across multiple slopes, especially on a roof over 12 years old whose seal strips have weakened: that's slope or full replacement territory and typically an insurance claim. A roofer's photo documentation of creases per slope is what supports it.
Straight-line winds and tornadoes. Most DFW wind damage is from straight-line winds in severe thunderstorms and is a standard covered peril. Tornado damage is also covered but often involves structural work and a larger claim.
What to do this week
Photograph from the ground: missing shingles, debris, damaged fences and trees, and the date. Check the attic for daylight or wet insulation if you can do so safely.
Get an insured local roofer to walk the roof, lift shingles along the windward slopes, and photograph creases. Ask for a written repair quote and their honest read on whether it rises to a claim.
If decking is exposed, tarp before the next rain. DallasRoofQuotes is a free matching service; we connect DFW homeowners with insured local roofers who tarp, document, and repair wind damage, and you choose who to hire.
