Missing shingles in Dallas almost always come from wind, and the ones you can see in the yard are only part of the problem: the shingles around the gap have usually been creased and lost their seal, so they'll blow off in the next storm. A few missing shingles on a roof under 12 years old is a straightforward repair, commonly a few hundred dollars. Missing shingles across several slopes on an older roof, or shingles that come off easily because the seal strip has failed everywhere, point toward replacement and possibly an insurance claim.
Why shingles blow off in North Texas
Wind. Straight-line winds in DFW spring storms routinely exceed 60 mph, and gusts in a severe cell can top 80. Shingles are rated for wind, but only when the adhesive seal strip is bonded. Once shingles age, or if they were installed in cold weather and never sealed, they lift.
Heat and age. Texas sun bakes the asphalt and the seal strip loses grip after 12 to 15 years. An older roof can lose shingles in a routine thunderstorm that wouldn't touch a newer one.
Installation. Shingles nailed too high, with too few nails, or with the wrong nails come off early. If a roof under 10 years old is losing shingles in ordinary wind, the installer may owe you a warranty repair.
Repair or replace: how to tell
Repair when the roof is under about 12 years old, the missing shingles are in one area, and the surrounding shingles are still sealed. The roofer replaces the missing tabs, reseals any creased neighbors, and checks the ridge caps. Commonly $300 to $900.
Get a replacement quote when shingles are missing on multiple slopes, when the roofer can lift shingles by hand across the roof because the seal has failed, when granules are gone and the mat is showing, or when the roof is 15 or more years old. A wind event that strips an old roof is often the moment it becomes an insurance conversation.
Matching. Replacement shingles on a faded roof will show. It's cosmetic and acceptable on a rear slope; on a prominent front slope, some homeowners replace the whole slope.
How urgent is it, and what to do now
Exposed underlayment can shed water for a short while, but exposed decking cannot. If you can see wood, or if rain is in the forecast within a few days, get a tarp or a repair scheduled now. If the underlayment is intact and weather is dry, you have a little time to get two quotes.
Photograph the roof from the ground and the shingles in the yard with the date. If it was a named wind event, your insurer may cover the repair above your deductible, though small repairs are often under the deductible.
