Hail damage on a DFW roof shows up as round bruises where granules are knocked off and the asphalt mat underneath is fractured, plus dents in gutters, vents, and other soft metal. You usually can't confirm it from the ground. An insured local roofer walks the roof, marks a 10-by-10 test square on each slope, and counts hits; adjusters generally look for roughly eight or more per square to replace a slope. If your neighborhood was under a hail warning and your gutters are dented, get an inspection within days, before the evidence fades and before the out-of-town crews arrive.
What hail damage actually looks like
On shingles: dark, round, soft spots where the granules are gone, often with a small crater feel when pressed. Fresh hits look black or shiny because the exposed asphalt hasn't weathered. Older damage weathers gray and is harder to distinguish from wear.
On metal: dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents, turbine vents, flashing, and AC units. Soft aluminum shows hail size clearly and is the first thing adjusters photograph.
Around the house: splatter marks on fences and decks where hail knocked off dirt or paint, torn window screens, shredded leaves, and dents on cars. All of it supports the roof claim.
What adjusters count and what they deny
The test square. Roofers and adjusters chalk a 10-by-10 foot square on each slope and count hail hits. Around eight or more hits in a square, on a slope, generally qualifies that slope for replacement under most Texas policies. Fewer may mean a repair or a denial.
Damage vs. wear. Adjusters distinguish hail bruises from blistering (small raised bumps from manufacturing), granule loss from age, and mechanical damage from foot traffic. A roof that's simply old with a few hail marks may get denied, and the claim still goes on your record.
Cosmetic exclusions. Many Texas policies now exclude cosmetic damage on metal roofs and some exclude it on shingle roofs. Read your policy or ask your agent before filing.
The DFW hail cycle and how to handle it
March through June is prime hail season, with Collin and Denton counties and the northern suburbs hit most often. Most DFW roofs over 12 years old have been through at least one significant event, and many neighborhoods re-roof together every 8 to 12 years.
After a storm, verify before you sign. Out-of-state crews flood damaged neighborhoods. Get a physical DFW address, insurance certificate, and references. Don't sign a contingency agreement or assignment of benefits on the doorstep. Deductible waiving is illegal in Texas.
Consider Class 4 shingles. If you're replacing after hail, impact-resistant shingles cost more but many Texas insurers offer premium discounts, and they hold up better in the next storm.
