In 2026, a full AC replacement in Dallas–Fort Worth commonly runs $6,500 to $14,000 for a standard split system, with high-efficiency variable-speed systems often reaching $15,000 to $20,000 or more, and two-system homes roughly doubling the figure. Prices moved up from a few years ago because of the 2025 refrigerant transition to A2L refrigerants, higher equipment costs, and stricter SEER2 minimums. The number on your quote depends mostly on tonnage, efficiency tier, whether the furnace or air handler is replaced with the outdoor unit, and attic access.
What moved the price in 2025 and 2026
Refrigerant. Since January 2025, new residential systems ship with A2L refrigerants (R-454B or R-32) instead of R-410A. Manufacturers redesigned equipment, and the new units cost more. Contractors also retooled and restocked.
Efficiency minimums. Texas is in the South region, where the federal minimum is 14.3 SEER2 for most split systems under 45,000 BTU. There is no cheap low-efficiency option anymore.
Federal tax credits changed. The 25C credit that offset part of a high-efficiency install ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, under 2025 federal legislation. Oncor rebates through participating contractors and some retail electric provider offers remain. Confirm current incentive status with your installer.
Typical DFW replacement price tiers
Standard efficiency (at or near SEER2 minimum), single-stage, 3 to 5 tons, matched outdoor unit and coil: commonly $6,500 to $10,500 installed. This is the bulk of metroplex tract-home replacements.
Mid efficiency, two-stage, with a new furnace or air handler: typically $9,500 to $14,000. Better humidity control in DFW summers and quieter operation.
High efficiency variable-speed (often 17 to 20+ SEER2) with a communicating thermostat: often $15,000 to $20,000 or more. Payback is reasonable in DFW because of run hours, but it's still a long horizon.

What should be included and how to compare quotes
Every quote should include a Manual J load calculation or documented sizing rationale, matched indoor and outdoor components, a line set flush or replacement, a new pad, thermostat, permit, disposal of the old unit, and commissioning with measured refrigerant charge and airflow.
Ask what's not included: electrical panel upgrades, duct repairs, attic platform or drain pan work, and drywall patching are common add-ons. A low quote that excludes them isn't lower.
