If your AC is running but the house won't cool in Dallas, the most common causes are a clogged filter, a dirty outdoor coil, a weak capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen indoor coil, or a clogged condensate drain that has tripped the safety switch. Check the filter, breaker, and thermostat first, make sure the outdoor fan is spinning, and look for water in the attic drain pan. If the outdoor unit runs but the air at the vents is warm, turn the system off and call a licensed tech. The five-minute checks before you call anyone
Thermostat. Confirm it's set to COOL, the setpoint is below room temperature, and the fan is on AUTO, not ON. A fan on ON circulates warm, humid air between cycles and makes the house feel worse.
Filter. North Texas pollen and dust load a one-inch filter in a month in summer. Starved airflow is the top cause of a system that runs without cooling. Replace it and give the system an hour.
Breaker, outdoor unit, and drain. Check the panel for a tripped breaker. Confirm the outdoor fan spins and warm air blows out the top. Then look at the attic air handler: if the drain pan has water in it, the condensate drain is clogged and the float switch has shut the system down. That's the most common DFW-specific shutdown in summer.
Why DFW systems stop cooling in summer
Heat and humidity. Outdoor units run for hours at a time from June through September. Capacitors weaken with heat, coils clog with cottonwood fluff and grass clippings, and compressors overheat and trip.
Condensate. Humid air means the indoor coil pulls gallons of water a day. Algae grows in the drain line, the pan fills, and the float switch kills the system. It looks like a dead AC and is usually a quick fix.
Refrigerant leaks and frozen coils. A system that cooled fine last summer and is now weak is often low on charge. Low charge or low airflow lets the indoor coil freeze, and a frozen coil blows warm air until it thaws.
When to shut it off and get a tech out today
Turn the system OFF at the thermostat if the outdoor unit runs but the indoor air is warm, if you see ice on the copper lines, or if the unit short-cycles every few minutes. Continuing to run it risks the compressor.
