Repair or Replace Your Roof in Austin: Age, Hail, and Cost Thresholds That Decide It

Age. A 30-year architectural shingle commonly lasts 15 to 22 years in Austin, because forty-plus 100°F days a year and relentless UV dry out the asphalt long before the warranty ends. Past 15 years, granules wash into the gutters, tabs curl and crack, and shingles get brittle enough that a repair crew breaks more than it fixes. At that point every repair is a down payment on a replacement.

Hail. Insurers and roofers work from a rough percentage rule: damage on one slope gets a slope repair, damage across roughly a quarter to a third of the roof or on most slopes gets a replacement. If you are replacing anyway, schedule before the March through June hail season if you can; after a storm, local crews are booked for months and out-of-town crews fill the gap. If a hail claim is on the table, get the inspection and file first, then let the approved scope set the timing.
